Приєднався 24 січ 2016
Hello, my name is Elijah and I am a full time blacksmith and knife maker in Texas. Fire Creek Forge is here to provide entertaining and informative content on the art and science of forging knives, tools and weapons.
I enjoy building historically inspired projects, and original ideas. With the vast heritage of blacksmithing across world cultures, this channel is a great way to explore the near infinite possibilities in forging edged tools. I made my first knife over twenty years ago and I still have more ideas than time.
Besides creating UA-cam content, I also make heirloom quality working knives and axes to sell in my online store. Most importantly, I'm a husband and father, and a believer in Jesus Christ my savior.
I hope this channel will inform and inspire you.

Fascinating and lovely. So Damascus is primarily a cosmetic choice? Blacksmiths get respect as valued craftsmen - and also because they're insanely strong and they have all the sharp things 😄
You should consider more than PSI for efficiency, since those burners likely use the same overall volume of gas. If you have a hose at 100 PSI flowing at 50 gallons a minute and a 50 PSI hose at 50 gallons a minute, they're both the same volume but one has a higher flow rate. I'd try putting your tank on a bathroom scale and see how many pounds you use per hour compared to a Venturi burner, since that's really the fairest and easiest way to do things. Forced air should be more efficient though since you're able to adjust from reducing to and oxidizing flame, whereas a Venturi burner is a super reducing environment with lots of unburnt fuel. There's pros and cons to reducing vs oxidizing, but reducing makes less scale and is better for forge welds/reactive alloys, and oxidizing is good for maximum heat/sacrificial material like a canister. You should generally be able to tell just by smell, as the reducing should smell a bit like propane whereas the oxidizing should smell really hot and dry.
Yes. I came here to say the same. Less restriction=less pressure @ the same volume.
I made a body for a sword forge at least 2 years ago and didn't finish it because of the ribbon burner. Currently I use my old forge burner in my furnace and hooked up to a shop vac, and I'm able to melt steel if I'm not careful. Eventually I'll finish that forge by making burners, but for now using forced air in a regular burner is fine for my casting needs since I haven't made knives in a while
What kind of blower do you have/use?
It's a greenhouse blower, sold on Amazon
@@FireCreekForge thanks, love your videos
Very interesting thanks
You bet
Very informative so thank you for sharing how to
Glad it was helpful!
Well done, nice new forge.
Thanks Randy
In my procrastinating about building forced air burners (because it does cost a bit more than compared to a venturi) I did find air-blowers and neck-down components from of all places: Hyrdroponic stores Apparently they use them to move stale and hot air out of greenhouses and there's a fair variety with the kind of CFM which suits these burners. Mostly because for those of us not in the USA, it can actually be harder than you think to find something that's both 220V AC and not made of Chinesium that will stop working and explode your shop. Just something for those looking to make one
Yes, this blower is actually for a green house
I have a ribbon burner forge and i feel like it doesn't quite get hot enough. My venturi forge seems like it gets way hotter.
Hmm, that's odd. Is the inside of the forge larger on the ribbon burner forge?
@FireCreekForge the ribbon burner forge is slightly larger but it's not huge its 4x4x16
This is very satisfying. It's almost like every cut is just one cut replayed. If that makes sense.
Did you build that forge setup yourself? 😊
Yes sir I did
I see in some of your shorts videos here on UA-cam you answer questions , can you tell me the reason I see people adding ground black pepper to some of their billets , tia , love the channel btw
Thanks, welcome to the channel! The organic matter adds a some carbon and also burns up oxygen that may be in the canister. However, there will be negligible carbon absorption and if the canister is made properly oxygen is also a non issue, so perhaps its more for the story than anything.
@@FireCreekForge thanks bubba 🤙🏼
I recently got my hands on a hardwood called greenheart and I think it’s one of the coolest woods I’ve used, I think it would be cool as a knife grip
Very nice looking scales, I didn’t realize people used box elder for anything. We always kinda considered them a junk tree around here.
Yeah I've only seen them used when stabilized, makes some neat handles.
That is beautiful. I'd love to have a chefs knife with a handle made with that...
Why did you call them petty?
Petty as in small, that's just what they're called sometimes I guess
Where did you get the reducer for the blower
Housemade industrial makes them
Picked up my 8” Sharpal 162N sharpening stone on the recommendation of Outdoor55 and NOT disappointed! 😊
Beautiful!
I remember being a kid and my dad would give me the brass guard and pommel pieces to file down and polish
That is very attractive Elijah , is it your build?
Thanks! Yep, that's a shop build
Nice
Excellent instructional video. Appreciate the step-by-step narrative. Thanks.
What size hole/tip is the gas running through? Cheers
1/4" pipe nipple
Nice setup! Loud blower though. 🫤
Thanks! Still quieter than a Venturi burner forge though.
@@FireCreekForge for sure!
Первый раз вижу такой узор на лезвии ножа. Мастеру моё уважение.
What are you sanding? Doing 65 hrc 10v my needs are different than carbon steels. I haven’t found a sandpaper that didn’t handle my Windex. Another tip, I use armor all glass cleaner without ammonia. It lasts a lot longer. Windex evaporates super fast
I'm just doing high carbon steels. I'm not sure there's a sandpaper out there that would handle 10v without a lot of elbow grease!
This was the one!!
I just got one too. Haven't used it yet but planning on breaking it in today. It's definitely a lot nicer than my other $20 stone I found out about it from outdoor55 as well
gostei, o seu processo de forja.
This was prolly one of the cooler builds back in the day. It was fun
Bladesmithing is something I'm interested in but only occasionally mess with, I mostly just do basic stuff like firepokers, leaves and hooks to build up my skills, I also don't have a bench grinder which means I have to hand file or angle grind my blades both of which are less fun to me than forging so videos on metallurgy aren't very useful to me right now, hope it works out for you though
very nice, and well linked I was half way through the second replay before I realised I was watching the same heat over again. Well timed editing and I'm looking forward to seeing it finished

Love your videos! Always wanted to forge and watching your videos really makes me want it more.
You gotta change the title name lol. The notification pops up and looks like its going to say forging san mai nak...(naked?) Thatd be pretty risque haha
too many hot bits in a video like that lol
Thanks for your initial impression video’ Two months in, may I ask what you impression and usage of the stone is?
arent you scared of the tiny molten metal sparks to go into your eye? or is it impossible For it to happen?
Well it's possible for bits of hot scale to fly around, but nothing is molten during forging. Still wouldn't be good, but I'm wearing glasses so that helps.
Here's the first Metallurgy Monday video: ua-cam.com/video/HzGFhFMZbgU/v-deo.htmlsi=OiscBokfyS8s_K6u
My guess is access, I’d be willing to bet most watch through the app on their phones and the join button doesn’t show up anywhere you’ve listed on the mobile app you have to open the channel in a browser, which if you open the browser on your phone it tries to reroute you to the app. Makes it difficult to sign up and took multiple attempts to even be able to get to where I could join.
Ok, interesting. Are you able to access the Metallurgy Monday playlist on the channel?
@@FireCreekForge I can see the playlist but no way to join from the homepage or video on the mobile app. Definitely seems to be a UA-cam issue. I wonder if the metallurgy Mondays would work better on Patreon.
@@edgeknifeworksok. Have you tried clicking on the video itself? That should provide a button to purchase membership. Yes, perhaps patreon is a better option.
@@FireCreekForge yes I tried clicking on the video itself and it just takes you to the video and says you need to join to view it, I’ve tried clicking on the video on that screen as well and it doesn’t do anything or have anything to click to join.
There’s nothing in the playlist from what I can see. I’m not super tech savvy, so maybe the issue is access?
I see, are you able to see the Metallurgy Monday playlist at all on the channel page?
Nice
For a big blade made out of that blade steel S35VN, it did super good and keep up the good work. 😳👍

Is 52100 a high carbon steel?
Yes, 1% carbon
